There are many tough decisions that come with planning a wedding.

One of the decisions that have to be made is who your maid/matron of honor is going to be. This is the person that is not only going to stand up next to you on your big day, but also help you through the entire planning process. The maid of honor has many jobs, so it is important to choose wisely.

Your maid of honor should be someone that you have a bit of history with. This person should be someone that has seen you through many ups and downs. She should know you and how you have evolved over the years. The most important thing to consider when choosing your maid of honor is that she has your back. This person should be someone that you have a true connection with as you are going to be relying on her a lot during the entire planning process. Often times a sister or a best friend is chosen. It is also possible to have co-maid of honors if the bride simply cannot decide.

What are the Maid of Honor Duties?

The role of maid of honor is part emotional lifeboat, part worker bee. There are a lot of responsibilities that come with being chosen as the maid of honor. The amount of work that a maid of honor does depends directly on the bride to be. Some of the ways a maid of honor may help the bride before the wedding include:

• Look for wedding locations • Help pick out invitations

• Explore decorations and floral options

• Help bride choose her dress

• Help pick out bridesmaids dresses

• Oversee the delivery of the dresses

• Spread information about where the couple is registered and answer questions about gifts

• Help plan the seating for the wedding

• Make recommendations about the cake

• Host a bridal shower

• Host a bachelorette party

• Attend rehearsal dinner before the big day

• Keep a list of all the gifts that are received

During the big day the maid of honor will help the bride get dressed, including her hair and makeup. A good maid of honor will also help calm a nervous bride down before she walks down the aisle. Often times the maid of honor will need to act as a messenger for the bride and groom as well as other family members. During the ceremony the maid of honor will hold the grooms ring as well as the bride’s bouquet.

After the ceremony the maid of honor will sign the marriage license as a witness. During the reception she will act as a greeter and then toast the new couple. If a formal reception is held the maid of honor will participate in the first dance partnered with the best man.

Being chosen as the maid of honor is a privilege and comes with many responsibilities as listed above. Essentially, the role of maid of honor is to help the bride with whatever she needs help with during the entire wedding planning process and during the big day.
