There has been tremendous growth in the UK fashion market over the last five years, according to Natalie Massenet, who is the Chairwoman of the British Fashion Council. She announced the impressive growth at the opening of London Fashion Week, at a press conference.
She mentioned the following
- The value of the fashion market to the UK economy has gone from £21 billion just five years ago to £26 billion today. That is a more than 20% increase.
- The fashion industry in the UK supports nearly 800,000 jobs.
The Mayor of London made an important statement in support of the contribution the industry has made to the UK economy. The Chancellor of the Exchequer and the COO of Oxford Economics also made statements in support of the UK fashion industry.
The COO of Oxford Economics, Sam Moore, wished everyone at London Fashion Week well, and he said that he hoped it would generate additional opportunities for the best talents to showcase their work. He said that a flourishing fashion industry would mean more jobs for people and better economic support for the people of Britain.
What Is London Fashion Week?
If you’re reading this and you’re not familiar with what London Fashion Week is, here’s a short primer. It’s a clothing trade show event that takes place in London twice annually, in the spring and fall. London Fashion Week in September is right around the corner. It is one of many fashion weeks, along with those held in New York, Paris, and Milan.
The British Fashion Council organizes London Fashion Week. Mercedes-Benz officially sponsors the event.
Over 5,000 buyers and press attend the event. It is thought that orders of more than £100m are placed during London Fashion Week each time it is held. The media coverage of the event exceeds most major sporting events, and photographers, journalists, radio & TV crews all over the place.
Each day of the week features different events and designers. Some of the big names include Bora Aksu, Eudon Choi, Paul Costelloe, Emilia Wickstead, Markus Lupfer, and dozens more. There are several events held each day. As far as the fashion week event in September of 2014, more than 75 designers will be doing catwalk collections or presentations during the five-day span that London Fashion Week takes place in. Global fashion brands present their newest collections alongside up-and-coming fashion designers making their debut on the international scene.
London Fashion Week is an opportunity to see the direction fashion is heading in, and it features the best of old and new – the establishment fashion designers and up-and-coming talents as well. If you’ve never seen coverage of London Fashion Week, it’s hard to imagine the activity, hoopla, and energy surrounding the five-day event. Fortunately, there is a lot of TV coverage to chew on, supposing you’re not able to attend in person. LFW has been a bi-annual event for several years now, and it is only growing in popularity.
