Being chosen as the best man for a wedding is a big deal. This position comes with many responsibilities, including giving a speech during the wedding reception. If you are like most people, you are likely nervous about giving a speech in public, but this is one responsibility that you simply cannot pass off. It is your responsibility to come up with a speech that will honor the special and most important day of your friend or relative’s life. The good news is, it is just a speech and no one is going to expect it to be perfect. However, there are a few things that you can do to make sure that your speech does not suck.
First, remember that the groom chose you. This means that you need to be yourself, do not try to give a formal speech that is not a reflection of you.
Second, make sure that you keep the speech short. This does not mean that you simply deliver a one liner or say cheers, but you do not want to ramble. Your speech should be long enough to say what you want to say and not much more. A good rule of thumb is to keep the speech between 2 and 4 minutes. Anything over 5 minutes is going to bore most of the audience.
Make sure that you introduce yourself and tell how you know the couple. You will want to make sure to practice your speech ahead of time so that you are comfortable making it in front of the crowd. Make sure that you thank the couple and their parents during the speech. Finally, be humorous; tell a few jokes about your friend/brother/relative. This will lighten the mood and help ease into the next part of the reception.
